The sharp divide between sacred and secular objects is ultimately an arbitrary one: sacrality is less a quality inherent in the object itself than a product of the way in which the object is seen. This is particularly evident in medieval universal histories, in which all events are brought within the economy of salvation history, serving as threads in a larger fabric of the narration of the past. In the construction of this historical web, monumental objects play an important role. In the thirteenth-century Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, copied at the Crusader stronghold of Acre, objects such as the gates of Janus in imperial Rome, the Tower of Babel, and the fortified city of Troy serve as potent emblems of turning points in the historical past and as potential springboards toward an imagined future. These monumental points of reference form a lattice of historical parallels that impose form upon past time.

The research reported in this article adopted a discursive perspective, focusing on the production of arguments in interaction between therapists: that is, intersubjective coordination as it unfolds through narrative sequences. The key premise is that people constitute their social reality through the active use of language. The data consist of tape-recordings of meetings between therapists reflecting on their clinical practice. Therapists' descriptions of their clinical work can be divided into two different argumentative positions: one labeled "collaborative," the other labeled "directive." Analysis focuses on how therapists justify and criticize both positions. It is through this process of argumentation that therapists advocate for a collaborative stance, while at the same time keeping a directive stance even though it represents a clash with their preferred values. Therapists resolve this opposition by creating arguments oriented to justify the adoption of a directive stance while recognizing its undesirability. These findings are discussed in terms of the notion of dilemma as a rhetorical construction which enables and constrains the ways of thinking within a community of therapists.

In this article we aim to describe and analyze the characteristics of a community of practice and learning. The case study consists of exploring the development of a course for lifeguards in 2011. The course trains students in technical rescue, care, and safety for recreational swimmers. The data were collected through classroom observations and interviews with the students and the course professor. The results and analyses are presented in terms of the trajectory of participation of students and the theoretical categories relating to characteristics of learning communities. These categories are: realistic problems, shared goals, autonomy, identity, feedback, and collaborative knowledge construction. The results reinforce current trends in educational psychology about the value of participation and the importance of the above noted categories in the generation of effective learning communities.

Sara MoriThe essay explores some aspects of cultural sociability in which foreigners were involved in Pisa in the fi rst half of the nineteenth century. Pisa was a small town, but since the beginning of the nineteenth century, it became a popular destination for a good number of travellers, attracted by the artistic beauty, the mild climate and the possibility of thermal therapies. In this context it seems unusual the shortage of social and cultural opportunities except for the visit to the historical complex of Piazza dei Miracoli and the social events at the Casino of Nobility or at the literary salons of the Pisan high society, however, reserved for a very small group of foreigners. One aim of this paper is to underline the partial attempts made to widen the cultural activities in Pisa at that time, such as the founding of the English monthly magazine The Ausonian (1830), the establishment of the Pisan Book Society (1844), a circulating library linked to the Anglican Church of Pisa, a quite large community in that period, and initiatives related to the Convention of Italian Scientists in 1839, which brought in the Tuscan town many Italian and foreign scholars, often accompanied by their families.
