German Jews and the Local German Press: The Jewish Struggle for Acceptance in Constance, 1846

This article demonstrates how German Jews contributed to a discussion in local newspapers during 1846 about political equality in the Grand Duchy of Baden and inclusion in Constance, a city from which Jews had been exiled in 1448. Within these discussions, there was also a prominent inner-Jewish debate between Reformers and traditionalists on the future direction of Judaism, including the participation of the local Reform-leaning rabbi. The discussions were part of an intricately intertwined Germany-wide societal debate about Jewish emancipation, yet they show that their local dynamics took on various forms and appeared in important local publications that influenced local decisions. This article will uncover these contributions and argue that German-Jewish participation in public discussion was an important part of how Jews fought for their rights to be included as equals in German society while also preserving their Jewish identity and their religion.

Hannah Arendt’s Dedication to Salvaging Jewish Culture

This article aims to highlight the significance of books and book collections, together with public, private, and scholarly libraries in Jewish tradition and Diasporic existence, and to emphasize their role in both preserving cultural memory and securing the continuity of Jewish culture after the Holocaust. Awareness of this role strongly informed salvaging activities of Hannah Arendt that have received little scholarly attention. First, Arendt served as a researcher and editor-in-chief in the compilation of tentative lists of Jewish cultural assets in Axis-occupied countries (1945-1946).11 The importance of these lists stems from the fact that they constitute a road map of Jewish culture, serving as a printed, preserved cultural site that contributes to cultural memory and testifies to the Jewish propensity for collecting cultural objects. The lists reflect the wide geographic dispersal of Jewish cultural assets and the often strong involvement of Jews in the lives of their communities; they also testify to the loss of and damage to these assets before and during the Holocaust. Second, in her role as Executive Secretary of Jewish Cultural Reconstruction, Inc. (henceforth JCR) from 1949 through 1952, Arendt contributed to the location, salvaging, and redistribution of such assets, remnants of the Holocaust, including displaced books, manuscripts, archival documents, and library and archive collections. Lastly, Arendt was a book collector and her private library served as a medium of personal remembrance. These are activities that should be examined in the context of Arendt's efforts to ensure the continuity of Judaism and its culture after the Holocaust.
