Abstract English
In order to challenge the widespread identification of political inter-, trans-, and supranationalization with the disappearance of boundaries, the following heuristic reflections will concentrate on a few selected phe-nomena and changes of boundaries under conditions of increasing and intensified cross-border politics. While concentrating on boundaries that are constitutive with regard to state theory, the focus lies on par-ticular modes of appearance of these boundaries in times of intensified inter-, trans-, and supranational relations. In doing so, boundaries will be understood as social and political phenomena, while at the same time taking their epistemic significance into account. It should be considered if we are really dealing with the dissolving of traditional boundaries in cross-border politics or rather with the volatility of boundaries, i.e. with flexible boundary lines, whereas the boundary’s political and epistemic quality and function are not necessarily modified or weakened.

A Postcolonial Reading of the Sonderweg: Marxist Historicism Revisted
This article deals with the Sonderweg thesis by reconciling David Blackbourn and Geoff Eley’s criticism of the German Sonderweg with a postcolonial critique of Marxist historicism. The global trajectory of Marxist historiography shows that the «singularity » of the Sonderweg came to be conceptually translated as «particularity» within the Eurocentric and capitalocentric «universality». This sublime transmutation of the singularity into the particularity through the Leninist trope of the «Prussian path» implies the temporalisation of historical spaces in a linear development scheme, which accommodates global historicist time in a twisted form of «first in Europe, then elsewhere». A postcolonial reading of the Sonderweg throws light on Marxist historiographical debates on colonial modernity versus Sonderwege by subjecting the Eurocentric conception of the «Prussian path» to the complexity of global modernity.
Eine postkoloniale Lektüre der Sonderwegthese: eine neue Version marxistischen Geschichtsdenkens
Dieser Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit der These vom Sonderweg. Er wird David Blackbourns und Geoff Eleys berühmte Kritik an der Annahme eines deutschen Sonderweges mit der postkolonialen Kritik am marxistischen Geschichtsdenken in Verbindung bringen. Im Rahmen der globalen Ausbreitung marxistischer Historiografie wurde die «Singularität» des Sonderweges konzeptionell übersetzt als die «Partikularität
» inmitten einer eurozentrischen und auf das Kapital zentrierten «Universalität». Die sublime Verwandlung der Singularität in Partikularität durch die leninistische Trope vom «preußischen Pfad» in der deutschen Geschichte impliziert die Verzeitlichung historischer Räume in einem Schema linearer Entwicklung, das
globale historistische Zeit in eine Form presst, die immer dem gleichen Muster folgt: «erst in Europa und dann woanders». Eine postkoloniale Lektüre der Idee des Sonderwegs beleuchtet marxistische historiografische Debatten über die Alternative koloniale Modernität oder Sonderweg und konfrontiert dabei das eurozentrische Konzept des «preußischen Pfades» mit der Komplexität der globalen Moderne.
