This article argues that the idea of ‘Greater Palestine’ emerged from the distinctive milieu of pre-1914 German Zionism. German Zionists' familiarity with the "Orient" and their interest in colonization led them to conceive of alternative solutions to Zion, promoting Jewish colonization beyond Palestine. This was not only because the Ottoman authorities did not welcome mass Jewish settlement in Palestine, but also because the German Zionists believed that the presence of Jewish settlers in the immediate vicinity was beneficial to Zionism. The strongest advocate of the idea of a ‘Greater Palestine’ was Davis Trietsch, who argued that neighbouring countries under indirect British rule would prove to be safer temporary destinations than Palestine. Even Zionist leaders such as Otto Warburg considered this option, although it was sharply criticized by the ‘Palestinocentrist’ wing of the movement.

The article examines the case of seventy medical refugees from Nazi Europe who arrived in Turkey in the 1930s and 1940s. The relationship between Turkey and the refugees was more complex than previous accounts have indicated and can be characterized as a mixture of limited utilitarianism and evolving solidarity. The Turkish government wished to build a modern medical system and was therefore prepared to permit the immigration of foreign professionals. For the refugees, Turkey represented an escape from Nazi Germany or Austria that enabled them to continue to practise medicine.

The idea of settling German Jews in Syria and Lebanon emerged following Hitler's rise to power in 1933, inflaming the already unstable political situation in Lebanon and leading to a fierce debate between Arab and Lebanese nationalists. Focusing on the Jews of Beirut, the article examines the impact of this debate on the integration of German Jews into the Lebanese Jewish community.
