Die Rolle wissenschaftlicher SoftwareentwicklerInnen in DH Projekten
In DH Projekten arbeiten WissenschaftlerInnen mit oft unterschiedlichen Rollen und akademischen Hintergründen. Neben der geisteswissenschaftlichen Ausrichtung eines Forschungsprojekts durch Domänen-WissenschaftlerInnen, haben auch die Menschen, die technische Aspekte des Projekts umsetzen, eine wichtige Rolle für den Erfolg eines DH Projekts.
Solche MitarbeiterInnen, die zum Beispiel Algorithmen, Tools oder Webseiten konzipieren und entwickeln oder Daten modellieren und auswerten, sollen hier unter dem Begriff „wissenschaftliche SoftwareentwicklerInnen“ zusammengefasst werden. Gebräuchlicher ist die englische Variante des „Research Software Engineers“ (RSE).
RSEs haben diverse Hintergründe. So gibt es WissenschaftlerInnen, die ihre Erfahrungen in der Softwareentwicklung nach einem geisteswissenschaftlichen Studium erworben haben, aber auch SoftwareentwicklerInnen, die sich durch längere Zusammenarbeit mit GeisteswissenschaftlerInnen die nötigen Kenntnisse erarbeitet haben, um Fragen des Forschungsfeldes zu verstehen und technisch umzusetzen. Die Rolle des RSE im Vermittlungsprozess zwischen technischer Expertise und Domänen-spezifischem Fachwissen ist ein wichtiger Faktor für den Erfolg eines DH-Projektes.

Debate: Images & Archive
The Images & Archives debate will bring together, on 30th July, at Faculty of Social and Human Sciences (NOVA FCSH) Lisboa, a group of researchers on the history and criticism of photography and cinema who work with historical images found in colonial archives. The particular condition of these images concerning their contexts and the processes of re-contextualization they are subjected to, the challenges put to the (re)construction of their history, as well as the specificity of images as a historical media are some of the topics under discussion.
Each participant will present a specific object, whether the films of the Timor Anthropology Mission, the photographs of bodies “medicalized” by the Anthropobiology Mission of Angola, or photographs of personal files, to reflect on the unique status of these images in their complex relationship with powers or with counter-powers, in a Visual Culture perspective.
The entrance is free.
The journey is organized by the historian Silvio Marcus de Souza Correa, Senior Visiting Professor abroad (CAPES fellow) from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, and by the Photo Impulse research project of ICNOVA.

PHAROS, the International Consortium of Photo Archives, seeks a Project Manager for a 30-month pilot project (July 1, 2019 – December 31st 2021) to create a scholarly research platform that will bring together nearly 1.5 million images with accompanying documentation from five of the fourteen PHAROS member institutions using the ResearchSpace platform. It will serve as both a testing ground and model for the desired goal of PHAROS: to create a common platform for research on works of art in all media, through comprehensive consolidated access to photo archives.
In the first year of the project, external consultants will normalize and clean the data sets from participating institutions, map records to the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model for ingesting into the ResearchSpace platform. In the second year of the project, the user interface of the platform will be refined and adjusted, together with a scalable search architecture, according to input from a user research committee.
The project manager will be the primary contact person for all consultants and will work closely with members of the pilot project institutions:
