Im Jahr 1997 gründeten Dick Cheney, Robert Kagan und Bill Kristol den Thinktank "Project for a new American Century". Die Denkfabrik, die schnell auf eine prominente Mitgliederliste verweisen konnte, die zahlreiche spätere Mitglieder der Bush-Regierung sowie viele ehemalige Reaganites enthielt, formulierte in einem "statement of principles":

As the 20th century draws to a close, the United States stands as the world's preeminent power. Having led the West to victory in the Cold War, America faces an opportunity and a challenge: Does the United States have the vision to build upon the achievements of past decades? Does the United States have the resolve to shape a new century favorable to American principles and interests? [...] We seem to have forgotten the essential elements of the Reagan Administration's success: a military that is strong and ready to meet both present and future challenges; a foreign policy that boldly and purposefully promotes American principles abroad; and national leadership that accepts the United States' global responsibilities.

Bereits 2006 wurde die Denkfabrik wieder aufgelöst, nicht ohne sich den berechtigten Ruf erarbeitet zu haben, eine der einflussreichsten Lobbyorganisationen aller Zeiten gewesen zu sein. Spätestens mit der Wahl Donald Trumps zum Präsidenten 2016, der eine Strategie des "America First" und eine völlige Ablehnung wertebasierter Außenpolitik formulierte, war diese Theorie am Ende. Das "neue amerikanische Jahrhundert" hatte also kaum zwei Jahrzehnte geschafft. Das war mehr als das tausendjährige Reich zustandebekommen hatte, zugegeben.
