De l’art de se méfier
Catégorie aux contours imprécis, la méfiance a souvent été négligée par les sciences humaines et sociales. Les rares travaux à l’aborder directement (Hardin éd., 2004 ; Govier, 1997) l’ont presque systématiquement envisagée non pas comme un objet en soi, mais plutôt comme un simple défaut ou manque de confiance, comme une absence qui demanderait à être comblée pour maintenir ou restaurer un équilibre – social, mental, politique ou économique. La confiance, par contraste, est depuis une trentaine d’années devenue une source intarissable d’étude et de réflexion, comme en témoignent les innombrables ouvrages qui lui sont consacrés. Dans ces travaux, elle est surtout, pour ne pas dire exclusivement, considérée comme une dimension vertueuse, constructrice et nécessaire de la vie sociale : elle rend possibles les relations interpersonnelles et les échanges économiques (Guinnane, 2010), garantit la santé psychique, sous-tend la légitimité du pouvoir politique (Dunn, 1988), et, à la suite d...
