This article argues that the idea of ‘Greater Palestine’ emerged from the distinctive milieu of pre-1914 German Zionism. German Zionists' familiarity with the “Orient” and their interest in colonization led them to conceive of alternative solutions to Zion, promoting Jewish colonization beyond Palestine. This was not only because the Ottoman authorities did not welcome mass Jewish settlement in Palestine, but also because the German Zionists believed that the presence of Jewish settlers in the immediate vicinity was beneficial to Zionism. The strongest advocate of the idea of a ‘Greater Palestine’ was Davis Trietsch, who argued that neighbouring countries under indirect British rule would prove to be safer temporary destinations than Palestine. Even Zionist leaders such as Otto Warburg considered this option, although it was sharply criticized by the ‘Palestinocentrist’ wing of the movement.
