With the generous support of the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the German Historical Institute (GHI) and the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at the George Mason University (RRCHNM) invite applications from postdoctoral scholars and advanced doctoral students based in Europe for a 12-month fellowship in digital history.

This fellowship aims to connect scholars from Europe to digital history in the United States. The fellowship is intended to support a junior scholar working in the field of digital history or a junior scholar with less experience in digital history but interested in learning new research methods. We welcome applications from scholars who are seeking seed-funding in order to develop an innovative idea into a new project and/or funding proposal as well as from scholars who wish to pursue fully-fledged research projects.

The fellowship provides a unique opportunity for the recipient to work on his or her research project at the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM) at George Mason University (GMU), one of the most established centers for digital history in the United States with strengths in computational history, spatial history and GIS, public digital history and other methods. The fellow will be in residence for one year.

The Conference Coordinating Committee of the Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) invites proposals to host the Digital Humanities Conference in 2024.

Digital Humanities (DH) is ADHO’s annual international conference. ADHO’s constituent organizations are the European Association for Digital Humanities (EADH); the Association for Computers and the Humanities (ACH); the Canadian Society for Digital Humanities / Société canadienne des humanités numériques (CSDH/SCHN); the Australasian Association for Digital Humanities (aaDH); centerNet; Humanistica, l’association francophone des humanités numériques; the Japanese Association for Digital Humanities (JADH); the Digital Humanities Association of Southern Africa; Red de Humanidades Digitales (RedHD); the Taiwanese Association for Digital Humanities (TADH); and Digital Humanities im deutschsprachigen Raum (DHd). The next joint DH conference (DH2022) will be held virtually, organized by the University of Tokyo 25-29 July 2022. DH2023 will be held 10-14 July 2023 in Graz, Austria, organized by the University of Graz.

For DH2024 the call for hosts is “open”, meaning that we invite bids from academic institutions anywhere in the world in coordination with a designated ADHO constituent organization (see list above). We are particularly interested in proposals from institutions or groups of institutions that

Second Call for volunteers: ADHO Anti-Racism Task Force

Alliance of Digital Humanities Organizations (ADHO) is extending its call for participants in a new Anti-Racism Task Force. We have received a number of expressions of interest and are hoping to receive a few more before forming the Task Force. We have made an important change this new call: all members of the Task Force will have the opportunity to receive a one-time 500 Euro honorarium.

The deadline to express interest is now 15 March 2022.

ZBIW: Zertifikatskurs Forschungsdatenmanagement 2022/23 – Anmeldung bis 29. April 2022 möglich

Die Anmeldung für den Zertifikatskurs „Forschungsdatenmanagement“ ist ab sofort bis 29. April 2022 möglich. Der gemeinsam von ZBIW, TH Köln, Landesinitiative für Forschungsdatenmanagement – fdm.nrw und ZB MED – Informationszentrum Lebenswissenschaften entwickelte Zertifikatskurs startet damit ab August 2022 in die zweite Runde.

Der Kurs richtet sich an Beschäftigte aus NRW, die in wissenschaftsnahen Infrastruktur-Bereichen sowie in der aktiven Forschung arbeiten und sich für Forschungsdatenmanagement (FDM) interessieren. Er umfasst die Themenbereiche Forschungsdaten-Lebenszyklus, Datentypen, Forschungsprozesse in verschiedenen Fachgebieten, Open Science, Forschungsprojektmanagement, technische Infrastruktur für Repositorien, Metadaten, nachhaltiges Datenmanagement und relevante rechtliche Aspekte des FDM.

Frist verlängert – Machine Learning and Data Mining for Digital Scholarly Editions

Die Frist für die Einreichung von Beiträgen zur Tagung „Machine Learning and Data Mining for Digital Scholarly Editions“, die am 9. und 10. Juni 2022 an der Universität Rostock stattfinden wird, wurde verlängert: Beiträge können nun bis zum 1. März 2022 eingereicht werden.

Organisiert wird die Tagung vom Institut für Dokumentologie und Editorik, DH Rostock, dem Know Center und dem Centre for Information Modelling at the University of Graz. Sie wird von der Universität Rostock gefördert und von dem Projekt NEISS unterstützt.

Inhaltlich beschäftigt sich die Tagung mit Techniken des Data Mining und Machine Learning, die in mehreren Bereichen der Digital Humanities zunehmend eingesetzt werden, so auch im Bereich der Digitalen Editorik, etwa zur Texterkennung, zum Vergleich von Textzeugen oder zur Anreicherung von Texten mit sprachlichen oder semantischen Informationen. Ziel der Tagung ist es, gemeinsam über bestehende Ansätze zur Verwendung von Maschinellem Lernen und Data Mining im Workflow des digitalen Edierens zu diskutieren, diese zu reflektieren und über weitere, künftige Einsatzmöglichkeiten nachzudenken.

Special track: character network construction and analysis

At the turn of the 2020s, a defining characteristic of digital humanities remains the remarkably wide spectrum of viewpoints they encompass, ranging from a pure engineering perspective applied to humanities data to the use of well established humanities research methods to investigate born-digital artifacts. In this framework, the COMHUM workshop series positions itself as an international forum primarily devoted to the following research questions: (1) which computational methods are most appropriate for dealing with the particular challenges posed by humanities research, e.g., uncertainty,vagueness, incompleteness, but also with different positions (points of view, values, criteria, perspectives, approaches, readings, etc.

We are pleased to invite proposals for contributions to the Critical Infrastructure Studies & Digital Humanities book we are editing for the Debates in the Digital Humanities Series (University of Minnesota Press). (See our full, more detailed CFP.)

Critical Infrastructure Studies & Digital Humanities aims to direct the attention of digital humanists to the wider area of infrastructure studies, and deploy perspectives gained from that wider infrastructuralism to better understand the infrastructures of DH. It will bring infrastructural approaches front and center as an area where DH is uniquely equipped to lead the humanities in thought and practice, using its own infrastructural legacy as inspiration and mirror. The aim is to understand how infrastructure underpins and influences DH, and how DH in turn can influence infrastructure design, development, and maintenance. The volume will promote understanding of critical infrastructure studies as a field of writing and practice, and open dialogues between DH and cognate infrastructural fields.

Gerne machen wir auf den Call for Papers für die Jahrestagung 2022 des Forschungsschwerpunkts digitale_kultur der FernUniversität in Hagen aufmerksam. Den vollständigen Sammel-Call finden Sie hier.

Anfänglich enträtselt Hermeneutik als eher praktische Kunst die Sprache der Götter. Jene sprach sich durch Musen und in Orakeln indirekt und verästelt aus, bevor sie in heiligen Schriften fixiert vorliegt, die hermeneutisch sachgerecht gedeutet und ausgelegt werden müssen, um überhaupt erst ihren eigentlichen Sinn zu verstehen. Dem Problem, dass Zeichen und Texte, sprachliche Kommunikation überhaupt, prinzipiell missverstanden werden können, stellt Hermeneutik methodisch abgesicherte Verfahren entgegen, die durch Auslegung und Interpretationen jenen Sinn hütet und hervorbringt, den sie Worten und Büchern, den Erlebnissen und der Geschichte, unterstellt, – bei eigenwilliger Vernachlässigung der Zahlen. Daraus wird in der Moderne nicht nur die Geisteswissenschaft entstehen, sondern die Idee abgeleitet, dass wir als sprachliche wesentlich verstehende, d.h. hermeneutisch bedürftige Wesen sind.
