Wie kommen wir in den Geisteswissenschaften zu wissenschaftlichen Ergebnissen? Verkürzt gesagt durch die hermeneutische Interpretation von Texten, Bildern und Objekten, durch das narrative Füllen von Leerstellen, die uns diese aufgeben, durch spezifische Verknüpfungen, die in der Geschichtswissenschaft zumeist eine temporale Struktur aufweisen. Idealtypisch folgen wir dabei einer Fragestellung, verwenden standardisierte Methoden, bemühen uns um Berücksichtigung verschiedener Standpunkte und sind uns der eigenen Subjektivität beim Abfassen einer Darstellung bewusst. Für Experimente bleibt dort kein Platz, es sei denn, man meint Gedankenexperimente¹ oder definiert schon das “Sich-auf-die-Suche-machen- und-nicht-wissen-ob-es-zum-Thema-Material-gibt” als Experiment.

Zur Beantwortung einer bestehenden oder zur Generierung einer neuen Forschungsfrage jedoch, also als Methode im Erkenntnisprozess mit empirischen Anteil – und darum soll es hier gehen -, werden in den traditionellen Geisteswissenschaften keine Experimente gemacht. Wer dennoch von Experimenten spricht, meint zumeist ein “Ausprobieren”.

Anders, so scheint es, in den Digital Humanities: Experimente sind hier – allein schon sprachlich – omnipräsent. Lisa Spiro zufolge ist die Sprache der Digital Humanities voller Ausdrücke, die mit Experimenten verbunden sind.

Experimenting research design: Digital Humanities-Laboratories #dhiha6

On the second day of the conference “Digital Humanities Experiments #dhiha6” at the German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP) we will experiment in different Laboratories (see the arcticle “The program explained“). Four live experiments will be organised and the participants can choose according to their interests.

Nowadays, information about researchers and their activities can be found everywhere on the web, and there is nothing wrong with that in principle. A closer look reveals a more desperate situation: Many variations on the closed silo. On the one hand there are the classics like Web of Science (expensive, includes only traditional research products like the peer review journal article), on the other hand closed institutional systems (like Elsevier Pure, Thomson Reuters Converis) that are not mainly made for the web and its public.

Experimenting discussion: ConverStations #dhiha6

On Friday 12th – the second day of the conference “Digital Humanities Experiments #dhiha6” at the German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP) – we will try the dialogic form Conversation-Stations, or ConverStations (see the arcticle “The program explained“). The participants will debate different topics at different tables with different people.

Unsuccessful attempts or what might be considered as “failures” in Science have not really been reflected on in Humanities. Especially in the new constellation of “success” in humanistic Academia being increasingly measured by indices, third party founding rankings and (publication) ratings I would like to turn the attention to the positive sides of unsuccessful attempts and the context of experimentation in Digital Humanities.

Claudine Moulin is professor for Historical Linguistics and Director of the Trier Center for Digital Humanities. In 2010 she was recipient of the Academy-Prize (Akademie der Wissenschaften und Literatur, Mainz). In 2012/13 she was a visiting professor at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes EPHE/Sorbonne in Paris. She is currently a fellow at the Institut d’études avancées in Paris.

We start off on Thursday, 11th June 2015, at 6 p.m. with a traditional conference format: a keynote speech by Julianne Nyhan, assistant Professor in Digital Information Studies at UCL’s Department of Information Studies. Her talk will be on “New paths through the histories of Digital Humanities: uncovering hidden contributions to Busa’s Index Thomisticus”. This keynote will be discussed by Claudia Mueller-Birn, assistant professor for Web Science/Human-Centered Computing at the Institute of Computer Science at Free University of Berlin. A live stream of the keynote will be available.

Friday, 12th June 2015 will begin at 9 a.m. with a presentation of the game “winnobel” by David Chavalarias (ISC-PIF, Paris).

Conference “Digital Humanities Experiments” #dhiha6

Organised by: Mareike König, Suzanne Dumouchel, Lisa Bolz (all DHIP), Claudine Moulin (IEA/University Trier), Pierre Mounier (OpenEdition), Anne Baillot (Humboldt University of Berlin)

This conference addresses the gap between the research culture with which Digital Humanists are equipped via their disciplinary backgrounds and the research culture they foster in this field. Why does experimentation play a crucial role in Digital Humanities? How does it contribute to define the relationship between method and research questions? Can we identify barriers which currently prevent Digital Humanities from developing their full potential, leaving little room for iteration, comparison or failure? The conference itself is conceived as an experimental set-up with labs, data experiments and round tables.

Experimente im Textlabor #dhiha6

Dieser Blogpost entstand in Vorbereitung auf den Studientag “dhiha6 – Experimente in den Digital Humanities” und es dürfte nicht viele Mottos für Studientage geben, die besser zum Untertitel meines Blogs und dem von mir mit verantworteten System Tesla (Text Engineering Software Laboratory) passen dürften, ist es doch konzipiert als virtuelles Labor, um Experimente auf Texten durchzuführen. Texte sind darüber hinaus u.a. Studienobjekte der Digital Humanties (manche würden wohl gar behaupten, Texte wären die Untersuchungsobjekte der DH schlechthin). Tatsächlich wurde Tesla als eines von vier virtuellen Laboren ausgewählt, die auf dem Studientag am 12.06.2015 in Paris vorgestellt werden dürfen.

Da ganze 90 Minuten für eine Präsentation und das Experimentieren und im Anschluss daran noch einmal die gleiche Zeit für die Klärung von Fragen zur Verfügung stehen, muss ich mir also einiges an Programm einfallen lassen, was ich dort alles vorführen kann. Das hieß erst einmal Gedanken sortieren und eine Mindmap anlegen (was mir schon des Öfteren geholfen hat, Dinge zu planen). (...)

Call for blog posts as part of the conference #dhiha6 – “Experiments in Digital Humanities”

On June 12th 2015 the 6th Digital Humanities conference will be held in Paris. The event is organized by the German Historical Institute, the Cléo, the Paris Institute for Advanced Studies and European Science Foundation and the day will revolve around thethe theme of “experiments”. It will be an opportunity to test research practices and question the “scientific” approach of the Human and Social Sciences favored by the development of Digital Humanities.
In the course of this new edition the organizers call for blog posts on the topic of “Experiments in Digital Humanities.”

Thus, four research practices will be explored:

The classical Call for Papers or Articles becomes a Call for Blog Posts.
These posts will then be submitted to the Open Peer Review Process (OPR), an as of yet largely untested process which must be developedfurther.poorly exploited process and on which the changes are to be made.
The “OPR-Sprint”, an Open Peer Review which is to take place over just a few hours over the course of the symposium and which aims to test the online publishing of blog posts and the integration of comments.
The publication of notes and “conference proceedings” online, following the OPR and the integration of comments by the authors.

A list of potential topics is proposed here, though it is not exhaustive:

Call for Blogartikel im Rahmen des Studientages #dhiha6 – “Experimente in den Digital Humanities”

Am 12. Juni findet in Paris die sechste Ausgabe des Studientages zu den Digital Humanities statt, organisiert vom Deutschen Historischen Institut Paris, dem Cléo, dem Institut d’études avancées und der European Sciences Foundation. Der Studientag zum Thema „Experimente“ stellt die Möglichkeit dar, Praktiken zu testen und die „wissenschaftliche“ Herangehensweise der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften zu hinterfragen, ein Themenfeld, das durch die Entwicklung der Digital Humanities begünstigt wird.

Aus diesem Grund und um diese sechste Ausgabe der Tagungsreihe gebührend zu begehen, rufen die Organisatoren in diesem Jahr zu einem Call for Blogartikel zum Thema „Experimente in den Digital Humanities“ auf. Dieser Call bietet so die Gelegenheit, vier Forschungspraktiken zu erproben:

Der Call for Papers als ein Call for Blogartikel.
Diese Blogartikel durchlaufen anschließend ein Open Peer Review (OPR)-Verfahren, ein noch wenig erprobtes und in Zukunft weiterzuentwickelndes Verfahren.
Der „OPR-Sprint“, d.h. ein Open Peer Review binnen weniger Stunden während des Studientages, dient dem Testen der Onlinepublikation der Blogartikel und des Einbezuges der Kommentare.
Abschließend erfolgt die Publikation der Blogartikel sowie (ebenso online) der Beiträge des Studientages, ausgehend vom OPR und nach Einarbeitung der Kommentare durch die Autoren der Blogartikel.

Einige Themen werden an dieser Stelle vorgeschlagen, wobei die Liste nicht vollständig ist und Blogbeiträge gern darüber hinaus gehen können:

Die Blogbeiträge sollen zwischen dem 20. April und dem 31. Mai 2015 auf Französisch, auf Deutsch oder auf Englisch publiziert werden.
