Digitality and museal landscape – a contradiction? Critical thoughts on digitization in the museum
When visiting a museum, one expects to encounter and interact with historical objects, artefacts and their materiality. Especially after the turn of the millennium, museums increasingly introduced (and embraced) new digital components. Today, audio guides, for example, have become indispensable for many institutions. According to the National Museum of American History, it has more than 1.7 million objects “and a 22,000 linear feet of archival documents”[i] in its collection. The Deutsches Historisches Museum (German History Museum) in Berlin has also more than 60,000 historical documents and more than 900 movie clips from the past.[ii] These are too many historical objects and media to exhibit on the walls of museums. Therefore, museums have been discussing and experimenting with ways of using digital technology to make objects from their archives and storage facilities more visible. Would you expect that there will be a next level of presenting museal artefacts digitally to visitors?

„Jeder nur ein Spray!“

Treffender als das titelgebende „Spray“ (Desinfektionsmittel) wäre vermutlich die „Rolle“ (Toilettenpapier) gewesen, doch hätte dies das Monty Python‘sche Versmaß gesprengt. Womit wir beim Gegenstand dieses Aufrufs wären: Während Bund und Länder bereits begonnen haben, einige Bestimmungen des „Shutdowns“ wieder zurückzufahren, droht vielerorts ein „Dokumentationsleck“ in Sachen „Corona-Krise“.
Notwendigkeit und Ziel der Dokumentation
Insbesondere die kleinen, aber äußerst zahlreichen, omnipräsenten Maßnahmen des alltäglichen Lebens laufen Gefahr, durch das „Dokumentationsrost“ zu fallen: all die kleinen Zettel, die uns über vorübergehende Geschäftsschließungen, Verhaltensmaßnahmen oder bald anstehende Wiedereröffnungen informieren, Markierungen zum Abstandhalten, Absperrflatterbänder, Desinfektionsspray-Stationen zur Desinfektion von Händen respektive Einkaufswagen, erste Schlangenbildungen in Geschäften, Apotheken und Postfilialen, Video- oder Audio-Dateien von Balkonkonzerten, mit „Corona-Auflagen“ versehenen Demonstrationen, Lautsprecherdurchsagen etc. – hier kann sicher jede und jeder die Liste beliebig weiterführen.

Um zu verhindern, dass all diese für uns derzeit alltäglichen Phänomene zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt nicht – und damit niemals mehr – dokumentiert werden, soll hier eine sehr niederschwellige Form der Dokumentation angeregt werden, wie sie jede und jeder ohne große Vorkehrungen, Kosten oder sonstige Aufwände leisten kann.

Lecture Digital Humanities: Job perspectives | Vorlesung Digital Humanities: Berufliche Perspektiven. Ein Beitrag zum #dayofDH2020

This is the second time that we are devoting this lecture to the topic of job perspectives and career opportunities in the Digital Humanities. We feel that this is timely because despite the fact that the number of DH courses of higher education, professorships and departments has risen steeply and despite the fact that digitality and research data are very topical in the research community as well as in society at large, many pupils, teachers and students are finding it difficult to identify prospective jobs and potential employers in this domain. What is more, the Digital Humanities are not associated with any of the core subjects taught in schools. In order to help narrow the gap between the university and the vocational sphere, this lecture which is aimed at students of ‘Digital Philology’ and ‘Literary and Linguistic Computing’, but is also open for the rest of the university, seeks to provide an overview of the Digital Humanities and what they have to offer. In order to widen the perspective, we are also inviting colleagues from different areas – libraries, archives, publishing houses, companies and research institutions etc. – to contribute their perspective on job opportunities in the field.
The topic of the lecture is digitality as future and aims to show career paths in the Digital Humanities.
